A pan of baked ham and cheese gnocchi fresh from the oven.

Everyone loves ham and cheese.  Add some baked, fluffy gnocchi in there, and you've got a one-pot meal that you won't be able to stop eating. 🙂

This cheesy ham gnocchi dish does not require making your own gnocchi from scratch.  Nope, just buy the packaged ones from the supermarket and add them directly into the pan once the sauce is ready.

You can serve it with a light salad, but I prefer having it with some slices of bread --- they're especially handy when cleaning the remaining sauce from the plate. 😉

So, go ahead and get all your ingredients ready!

    Ingredients

All the ingredients you need to make baked ham and cheese gnocchi at home.

(See the recipe card below for measurements.)

    • Olive oil – use extra virgin olive oil, if possible.
    • Onion – finely chopped.
    • Ham – cubed, but smaller than the size of the gnocchi.
    • Stock – chicken stock is excellent for these cheesy baked gnocchi.
    • Gnocchi - generally found in any supermarket's ravioli and pasta section; there is no need to make it from scratch.
    • Cheddar cheese – complements the taste of the ham nicely.
    • Cream – I typically use double cream (also called heavy cream in some parts of the world).
    • Salt and pepper – just use your favorite brand for seasoning.

How to make cheesy ham gnocchi

Start by preheating your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.

Once the oil is ready, add onion.

Cooking the onions is the first step in preparing baked ham and gnocchi casserole.

Saute until the onion softens, then add the chopped ham.

The chopped ham needs to be cooked with the onions, before making the cheesy sauce and gnocchi.

Cook for a few minutes, coating the ham with softened onion.

Pour the stock and turn the heat to medium-high.  Leave uncovered for two minutes, mixing occasionally.

Add the cream and half of the cheese.

Cream and cheddar cheese helps in making the delicious sauce of this ham and gnocchi casserole.

Stir to combine everything, taste, and season with salt and pepper.

Add the gnocchi and mix to coat them with the sauce --- try to keep them in one layer.

Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top.

The gnocchi are then coated with the sauce, and more cheese are added before baking.

Place your cheesy ham gnocchi in the oven for thirty to thirty-five-five minutes --- change the setting to grill for the last eight minutes to get an even more golden top.

Remove from the oven and set aside for at least five minutes to cool.

Your cheesy ham gnocchi is now ready for serving --- enjoy!

    Helpful tips

    • There is no need to wait for the packaged gnocchi to warm up a bit.  You can just add them directly into the pan.
    • When mixing the gnocchi, try to coat all of them with the sauce before adding the cheese on top.
    • Go easy on adding the salt, remember that the stock is already seasoned, and the ham can be on the salty side.

    Recipe variation

    • Butter.  You can use butter to saute the onion instead of olive oil.  It will add a bit more creaminess to your ham and cheese gnocchi.
    • Other kinds of cheese.  Feel free to add your favorite cheese in the sauce or as a topping.  Parmesan is always a good addition.
