Why these yogurt buns are a keeper!

    • Soft, fluffy texture.  Yogurt adds natural moisture and a tender crumb, giving the buns a pleasantly soft texture without needing a ton of oil or butter.
    • Versatile for sweet or savory.  Whether you're making them for breakfast, as sandwich rolls, or to serve with soups and stews, these yogurt buns will be great due to their neutral taste.  Oh, it pairs well with cheese or plain honey for snacks, too! 🙂

    Ingredients

All the ingredients you need to make buns with yogurt at home.

(See the recipe card below for measurements.)

    • Flour – you only need all-purpose flour to make these buns with yogurt.
    • Yeast – as always, I use active dry yeast.
    • Yogurt – plain Greek yogurt is the best type that you can use for baking these rolls.
    • Oil – you only need a tablespoon; mild or fruity extra virgin olive oil would be great.
    • Salt – just use your favorite brand.

How to make buns with yogurt

Start by combining the yeast with warm water, then set it aside until it's ready.

Preparing the yeast is the first step in making buns with yogurt at home.

In a separate bowl, mix flour and salt.

The flour and the salt are combined before adding the liquid ingredients.

Add the foamy yeast (once ready), yogurt, and olive oil.

Adding the yogurt, oil and yeast with the dried ingredients to form the dough.

Mix, then once a dough starts to form, transfer it to a flat surface and knead until you get a smooth texture.

Form it into a ball and place it in an oiled bowl.

Cover with a kitchen towel and set aside until it has doubled in size (this typically takes 60 to 90 minutes).

Deflate the dough and divide it into six portions.

Form each portion into a ball and place it on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

Make a criss-cross cut on top of each bun.

Cover it again with a kitchen towel and set aside until they become puffy, which typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 200°C (375°F).

Once the oven is ready, uncover your yogurt buns.

Place the baking tray in the middle of the oven for about 30 minutes, or until they turn golden.

Remove the buns with yogurt from the oven and transfer them to a rack to cool.  Then, serve!

    Helpful tips

    • This is a beginner-friendly bread, so the dough is easy to handle.  Hence, you don't need to use a stand mixer at all; kneading by hand will yield excellent results.
    • If you want an extra crispy crust, spray your oven with a bit of water (about four sprays) when you place the tray in the oven --- this adds more steam that helps in creating the crispy crust for the yogurt buns.
